Pair of Handmade Horsehair Ceramic Vases
These one-of-a-kind ceramic vases are created using the traditional horsehair firing technique, a dramatic and highly unpredictable process that results in organic, smoke-like markings unique to each piece.
While still red-hot from the kiln, the vessel is removed and strands of horse tail hair are carefully applied by hand to the surface. Upon contact, the hair combusts instantly, leaving behind delicate, squiggling black lines etched permanently into the clay. Each strand reacts differently to the heat, making every vase entirely singular—no two patterns are ever the same.
The process is both risky and exhilarating: the intense heat and sudden temperature change mean that not all vessels survive the firing, adding to the rarity and value of those that do.
Finished in a soft, matte clay body with expressive, inky markings, these vases are sculptural objects meant to be appreciated for their form, surface, and presence. Because the clay remains porous, they do not hold water and are intended for decorative use only.
Beautiful displayed on their own or styled as a pair, these vessels bring an elemental, collected feel to shelves, consoles, or tabletop vignettes—equally at home in modern, wabi-sabi, or quietly layered interiors.
Available as a pair only.
